Embroidery has its own set of rules, different from print. A design that looks perfect on screen doesn't always translate cleanly into thread.
Embroidery physically stitches your logo into fabric, which comes with real constraints that print decoration doesn't have. Understanding them before submitting your design leads to a cleaner result and avoids surprises when the stitched version comes back different from what you pictured.
Before a logo can be embroidered, it needs to be "digitized" — converted into a stitch file that tells the embroidery machine exactly where to place each stitch, in what direction, and what thread color to use. This is a manual, skilled process, distinct from simply uploading an image file, and it's why embroidery orders include a one-time digitizing fee.
Thread has a physical minimum size — very small text, thin lines, or intricate detail that looks crisp on a screen often blurs together or becomes illegible once stitched. As a general guideline, avoid text smaller than about 1/4 inch and simplify fine detail before submitting a logo for embroidery.
Embroidery works in solid thread colors — it can't replicate a smooth gradient the way digital printing can. A logo with a gradient needs to be simplified into distinct color blocks for embroidery, which sometimes means working with a slightly adapted version of your logo for this specific application.
Larger, simpler designs generally embroider more cleanly than small, complex ones. If your logo needs to appear small (a polo chest logo, for example), it's worth previewing how it will look at that reduced size before finalizing — some detail that works at a larger size on a jacket back won't hold up at 3 inches on a chest.
Embroidery thread comes in a standard set of colors, which may not perfectly match your exact brand color in every case. A good digitizer will select the closest available thread match — worth discussing up front if exact color matching is important for your brand.
Certain fabrics handle embroidery better than others — tightly woven fabrics (twill, canvas) hold stitching cleanly, while very stretchy or loosely woven fabrics can pucker or distort under a dense embroidery design. A skilled digitizer will often adjust stitch density based on the specific fabric to minimize this effect, which is one reason it's worth confirming the exact garment before finalizing a design.
Beyond standard flat embroidery, specialty techniques like 3D puff embroidery (which creates a raised, foam-backed effect, common on hats) offer a distinctive look for certain designs, though they work best with bold, simple shapes rather than fine detail. These techniques cost more than standard embroidery but can be a strong choice for a premium hat or a design meant to stand out.
